According to Proven Winners , it grows perennially outdoors within U. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9a to 11a, although it's most commonly grown as a houseplant. Sometimes called "cabbage palm," ti plants are easygoing, low-maintenance tropical plants noted for their ability to withstand a wide range of growing conditions. Regular watering, light feeding and an occasional pruning are all that's necessary to successfully grow a 'Red Sister' plant, but it may also need periodic troubleshooting to manage leaf problems.

An established 'Red Sister' plant needs little more than watering and feeding. They grow best when the soil is evenly moist, but it should be allowed to dry out on the surface between watering to keep the plant's roots healthy. Ti plants can tolerate fluctuations in their soil moisture with little trouble, but they're sensitive to the type of water used. Avoid tap water because its fluoride content can cause leaf and root issues, warns the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension.

Instead, use distilled water or rainwater to water the plants, if possible. Ti plants grow slowly under dim indoor conditions, but under high light and warm temperatures, they're heavy feeders, according to Logee's Plants.

A balanced fertilizer with an N-P-K number no greater than works best for tropical foliage plants such as the 'Red Sister' ti plant. Apply a half-strength solution every two weeks during the spring and summer months and discontinue feeding in the autumn and winter to let the plant rest.

Ti plants rarely need pruning, although some may need to be cut back if too tall, or they may need to be rejuvenated to encourage denser growth. Or, it may need to be pruned to thin out its foliage because too much leaf cover can shade the lower leaves, which can dull their vibrant color. Prune in spring or summer when the plant is actively growing.

Cut back to the desired height, making the cut just above a set of leaves, which will encourage branching. Use sharp, sterilized pruning shears to prevent the transmission of infection. To sanitize the blades, first wash them in hot, soapy water to remove any dirt and grime and rinse with clean water. Dip the blades in the household disinfectant and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping the blades with a clean paper towel.

Fluoride toxicity is one issue with ti plants, which is caused by watering with tap water. It can cause tip burn in the leaves, which can develop into margin necrosis, according to the University of Florida. Another foliage problem is fusarium leaf spot, which you can minimize by watering at the base of the plant to avoid getting water on the foliage.

Another common foliage issue is a loss of color in the leaves. Low light is often the cause of poor color in ti plants, as is too much fertilizer. Keep the plant near a window with a sheer curtain or near an unshaded east- or west-facing window to enhance their color. Reducing the amount and frequency of fertilizer applications also can help brighten dull foliage. Sasha Degnan is a freelance writer and educator specializing in gardening and horticulture.
