This course is recommended for individuals who are interested in pursuing garden design at garden centers, thinking of starting their own business in garden consulting, or wishing to create beautiful spaces in their own backyard. Students will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of design from evaluating and measuring properties to presenting completed designs. Some of the topics that we will explore will be design principles, choosing the right plant for the right place, landscape installation, developing a plant palette, creating gardens that attract pollinators, and incorporating natives, edible plants, and herbs into the landscape. In this six-week course, students will have the opportunity to complete and present a garden design project.

The New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Services Landscape Design is for budding landscape designers who want to develop their garden design knowledge and skills. Learn the design process, including how to carry out a site analysis and select plants to create sustainable, attractive and functional residential garden designs.
Gain an excellent foundational knowledge of plants, soils, how to encourage garden biodiversity and green design solutions. This is the perfect programme for anyone interested in landscape design who wants to begin developing the core skills required.
You'll also gain some communication and supervisory experience, all of which will help you be ready to start your career in landscape design, creating plans for great garden designs that focus on planting soft landscaping.
Once you've successfully completed this programme you'll receive the qualification New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Services Landscape Design Level 4. From here you can seek work in the landscape industry, be self-employed or continue with further study. For example, you can pathway into the New Zealand Diploma in Landscape Design ; 60 credits available for cross-credit into the diploma.

This apprenticeship is suitable for anyone who wants to work as a gardener. Horticulture and Landscape Operatives can be employed to work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and retail outlets. Work is generally based outside and undertaken throughout the year, so apprentices will frequently work outside in all weathers. The apprentice can follow either the horticulture or landscape route.

Applied Horticultural Services (Level 3) (Amenity)
We are now offering the choice of two specialist streams in horticulture. You can choose to specialise in either landscaping or nursery and garden. In the landscaping stream you will learn hands on skills in paving, concreting, timber structures as well as plant identification, pest and disease management, plant propagation and plant establishment. In the nursery and garden stream you will learn skills in plant propagation, pest, disease and weed management, retail and wholesale nursery skills, customer service and plant establishment and garden maintenance.
